Our Father Who is in Heaven (Matthew 6:9)

DoubleBranchFWBChurch Matthew, New Testament, Sermon on the Mount, Topic Children of God, distractions, God our Father, heart, holiness, John Calvin, Love, prayer, worship

Prayer is one of the two most important actions that Christians do with the other being reading God’s Word. If prayer is one of the most important actions we do, no wonder that it is one of the most difficult. The devil fights us and so does our flesh. Jesus’ teaching on prayer in Matthew 6 is so helpful to the Christian. This prayer, the “Lord’s Prayer” as it has been called, is a model prayer, it is not necessarily meant to be repeated over and over. It helps us to understand prayer, to know whom we pray to, and what we pray for. One of the most important teachings in this prayer is to see to whom we pray. We pray to our Father. Only Christians can pray this way because only Christians can call God “Father.” We are to have a close relationship with our Father, and be able to tell Him what is on our heart. Also, though, He is our Father who is in heaven. He is in heaven and we are on earth. Yes, we must have a close relationship and tell Him what is on our hearts, but we must also remember that He is holy, righteous, and not like us. He is God. We must come to Him in fear and love.
